Playing trumpet and flugelhorn, Jonathan Powell mixes and matches with a core of Luques Curtis/b, Axel Tosca/key, Luisito Quintero/perc and Camilo Molina/dr-perc with a rotating cast of orns, vocals and percussion, percussion, percussion. Vocalists belt it out as well, as Anthony Almonte gives a clarion call on “Un Dia Bonito II” and Ariacne Trujillo sways to “You’re Everything”. Guitarist Nir Fender sizzles with flutist Itai Kriss on a sizzling “Hope” and the leader digs in deep on a clever take of Joe Henderson’s “Inner Urge”. “Mambo” is used as a verb here!
