Singer/songwriter John Korbel displays a wide swath of ideas on this album mixed and matched with Mark Falchook/key, Steve Luciano/g, Ezra Henry/dr, Marco Bojorquez/b, Alain Bradette/ts-ss, Sam Zambito/tp, Chris West-Kyle Schroeder/wwinds and Carmen Harrell-Sam Reckart/voc. His style comes a cross like a mix of Kenny Rankin and a husky Michael Franks, with many of the songs such as “Wheels Up” or “The One Without Wings” displaying a Broadway feel. There are also some sleek jazz moments with Bradette on “Take A Ride With The Top Down” and Korbel gets bluesy on “New York All To Ourselves”. The saxes moan and s way on the clever “Lizard of Oz” and a gospel choir joins in on the dramatic title track. Lots of great ideas here, insightful lyrics and catchy melodies; where’s the show to go along with the songs?
