Drummer Phil Haynes forms a trio with pianist Steve Rudolph and bassist Drew Gress to perform a concert of material from the pens of Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn. The pieces are not re-created as much as re-interpreted, with the band giving a dreamy and spacious read of “African Flower” and daintily swingin on “Perdido”. Rudolph is dreamy on “Single Petal of a Rose” while Gress does some rich bowing through “Lush Life” and “TGTT”. There is clever interplay on “My Little Brown Book” while getting a bit elastic on “Sophisticated Lady” and understatedly cool for “Take The ‘A’ Train”. Non imitation is the highest form of flattery.
