Ambitious energy oozes out of the speakers on this album by singer and keyboardist Ashley Henry. With a core team of Alec Hewes/b and Myele Manzana/dr, he mixes horns and tones on an album the feels part heart of Donny Hathaway, and a dose of Stevie Wonder, as on the R&B ish “Fly Away” with vocalist Aja Monet. There’s a dash of hip hop during “Synchronicity” and earthy urban soul with singer Judi Jackson during “Love Is Lide a Movie” and a big dose of gospel on a reverent “All For You” with Mak. More earnest than rap, more controlled than jazz, this guy is reaching for something that he’s almost grasped. Hang on tight!
