The Flying Horse Big Band: A Message From The Flying Horse Band

Directed by Jeff Rupert, The Flying Horse Big Band puts some large ensemble charts to classic hard bop Blue Note material by the likes of Benny Golson, Horace Silver and Wayne Shorter. The concept works well, with some bold and punchy section work set up for Josh Mecardo’s trumpet on “Free For All” some graceful reeds for him and tenor man Edmund Jackson on “Mosaic” and a boogalooing “Gregory Is Here” that includes Paul Van Wormer’s rich alto.  Guitarist Noah Charles grooves through “Lester Left Tow” and the muted trumpets emit shadows on “ Whisper Not”. The rhythm section grooves hard for “On The Ginza” while bassist Michael Santos flexes his muscles on the hopping “Room 608”. Last time out, they did a tribute to Batman and Robin themes. What’s next?!? Tunes with testosterone!
