Rob Luft: Dahab Days

These days, it seems guitarists sound like everyone else, so it’s refreshing to hear one like Rob Luft who has managed to create a unique and yet still attractive sound. He’s with a core unit of Joe Wright/ts, Joe Webb/p-B3, Tom McCredie/g and Corrie Dick/dr along with some guests on this vibrant collection of mostly originals. The band has a  kind of feel like the prog group Yes at times, doing wonders with Duke Ellington’s “African Flower” with added kalinba, while Byron Wallen’s muted trumpet gives an enchanting atmosphere to the traditional Arabic tune “Lamma Bada Yatathannna”.Alice Zawadzki’s rich fiolin blends with Luft on a dreamy and dramatic “Be Water, My Friend”, with Wright’s tenor painting soundscapes on “”Film”. The grooves shift gears as  Luft and Dick dig in on the title tune, and Steve Bucklye’s penny whistle creates a street festival with the leader on “Sunshine Music” Compositional wonders.
