Mark Vickness Interconnected: In The Rain Shadow
If you’re looking for sounds inspired by the Paul Winter Consort or Oregon, look no further than this album by guitarist Mark Vickness. He brings together a pastoral team of Mads Tolling/vi, Matt Renzi/ob-Ehn-sax, Joseph Hebert/cel, Dan Feiszli/b, Ty Burhoe/tab and MB Gordy/perc for a collection of originals that ooze with organic charm.
Tolling’s violin has an Appalachian charm about it on the folksy “High Desert” and “The Gorge”, with Renzi’s oboe sounding like a misty morning on “Alluvial Fans”. His alto sax gets bluesy on “Roadrunner”, and all throughout, the graceful rumbling of Burhoe and Gordy create a subtle groove that is both implied and state, particularly on “Rupak”> Heberts’ cello charms with the leader on the rural “Cloud Shadows” with verdant moods hinting at majestic overviews during “On The Cliffs of Mohr”. A new world of World Music.
