For most of her career, Lisa Hilton has created an impressionistic approach to her piano compositions and playing style. This time around, with trumpeter Igmar Thomas, bassist Luques Curtis and drummer Rudy Royston, she drinks from the well of Horace Silver, bringing in a soulful hard bop feel with a modern flair. There’s a funky muscular approach to tunes like “Anxiety Society” as Thomas glides like a polished brass glider, while some percussion discussion by Royston supports Hilton’s slithering fingers under Thomas’ dreamy tone for “Jagged Lil’ Blues’. She takes on Miles Davis’ “Blue in Green” with a muted Thomas in pastel fashion as well, while “Everyday Anthem” is booming with optimism. Finger poppin’!
