In the struggle to replace King Crimson, Ava Mendoza/eg, James Brandon Lewis/ts, Devin Hoff/b and Ches Smith/dr take up the challenge on this recent release. It seems like they stretch out the last note of “20th Century Schizoid Man” for an entire song on the jarring and shrill “Dyscalcula” while Lewis swirls around the dark title tune. Funky and metallic pulses go chunky for the head bangig “Interwhining” and the head g ets hammered for “Diablada”. Hoff’s bass introduces an ominous and harrowing “Babel-17” and Smith’s militaristic sticks eventually collapse into a quandry of “New Ghosts”. Neurosurgeons scream for more.
