The gifted team of Benny Golson/ts, Art Farmer/tp and McCoy Tyner/p created a sleek core for soulful hard bop between 1959-62. Their debut with Addison Farmer/b, Curtis Fuller/tb and Les Humphries/dr features classics “I Remember Clifford”, the clever “Blues March” and ultra hip “iller Joe”. With Tom McIntosh/tb, Cedar Walton/p, Thomas Williams/b and Tootie Heath/tb, the do a gig that includes a wonderful read of “Farmer’s Market” and deeply reflective “’Round Midnight”. In 62, they bring out Golson’s “Whisper Not” and a read of “Ruby My Dear”. The same year, with Harold Mabern/p, Grachan Monchur III/tb and Herbie Lewis/b, they show the richness of Golson’s pen on “Along Came Betty” and “Reggie”. Still fresh sounding
One of the most important voices in country music was Don Gibson, represented by his first albums here. His 1958 debut includes his own pieces like “Oh, Lonesome Me” and “Bad Bad Day”. Next year, he focused on covers like Chet Atkins’ “Too Much” and Webb Pierce’s “It’s My Way”. He has an easy feel to his next release that features “Lonely Street” and “Big Hearted Me”. His 1962 album features some of his own favorite tunes like Hank Williams’ “May You Never Be Alone” and “I’m Sorry For You My Friend” while his own material is featured on a 1960 album included “Sweet Dreams” and “What About Me”.
