Guitarist Wolfgang Muthspiel forms a lyrical trio with drummer Brian Blade and bassist Scott Colley on this recent album of folkish modernity. Of the more traditional side (in the Western Civ sense), Colley bows to Muthspiel’s strings on “Prelude To Bach” with Blade’s easy swing gliding the blue tones of “Liebeslied”. Blade also brushes deftly on the soft and fluffy “Dance of the Elders” and supplies a supple backbeat to Muthspiel’s clean acoustic work on “Folksong”. Most alluring is the ten minutes of reflection, using space as a sound, on the sublime “Invocation”. Music that takes you to the pasture.
