I remember when this 2003 tribute to the late great Bix Beiderbecke initially came out. It was a festive salute to the man who, along with Louis Armstrong, essentially invented the jazz trumpet before succumbing at a way too young age. The alluring part of this album is that it boasts a fuller and more swinging band (since the original recordings preceded The Swing Era) with the solos by cornetist Randy Reinhart, pianist Mark Shane and alto saxist Jack Stucky all filled with glee. The inclusion of C melody saxists make for bona fide sounds ,as Beiderbecke comrade Frank Trumbauer used that as his reed de jour. The rich ”I’m Coming Virginia”, hot’cha “The Jazz Me Blues” and “Riverboat Shuffle” are simply delightful, while the previously unreleased tunes such as “Trumbology”, and the frenetic “China Boy” sparkle like Waterford Crystal. Still fresh after 20 years as well a 100 years from the original inspirations.
