****RINGER OF THE WEEK****BIG BANDS…Doug Richards Orchestra: Through A Sonic Prism-The Music of Antonio Carlos Jobim

What? Another album of Tom Jobim?

Sure! First, you can never get enough of his music, but secondly, this orchestral album arranged by Doug Richards, featuring vocalist Laura Ann Singh and anchored by drummer Brian Jones, is just so fresh and creative that you’ll want to hear the old wine in the new wineskins.

There are wonderful textures and harmonies on “Chega De Saudade” that frame Adam Larabee’s guitar solo, while a kaleidoscope of colors permeate “Retrato em Branco e Preo”. The reeds are rich and low for John D’earth’s flugelhorn on ”Ligia” and the mellow tempo of “Samba de Uma Nota So” give the horns a chance to shine. Singh is rich and expressive, melding with soprano saxist John Wittman on the sensuous “ E Preciso Dizer Adeaus” and lilting on “Covendo na Roseira”. Any chance of a US tour?
