Swing is the thing with leader Jon-Erick KEllso playing trumpet and leading a hard hitting team of John Allred/tb, Scott Robinson/ts-tar-an, Jay Rattman/as, Matt Munisteri-Chris Flory/g, Neal Miner-Pat O’Leary/b and Evan Christopher/cl through some vintage toe tappers. The team has a Basie/Herman feel throughout, hard hitting, but with an easy swing to allow Allred to slide and glide through “I’m Coming Virginia” with Robinson’s tarogato adding some exoticism. Kellso is b right, and Robinson puuls out the obscure alto Normophone for “No One Else But You” and Chrisopher is fluid on the wwood stick for “I Double Dare You”. Vocalist Catherine Russell is in her element hear, and she belts out her dad Luis’ famous “Back O’Town Blues like she owns it, with Kellso’s horn plunging lower than one of Kim Kardashian’s necklines. Toe tapping treasures.
