Bass trombonist/composer Jennifer Wharton creates a four team ‘bone structure with Nate Mayland/dt, Alan Ferber/tb and John Fedchock/tb fronting a rhythm section of Michael Eckroth/p, Evan Gregor/b, Don Peretz/dr and Samule Torres/perc on this latest release. The big brass section works well, sleek on the bopping “Be Normal” and the swinging “Mama’s Alright” not overwhelming the solos by Fedchock or Gregor”. Peretz drives the team through the jagged and angular “Norhala” and teams up with Eckroth on “Virtual Realitive”. The horns seduce well with Gregor on “Virtual Reality” and are warm with Torres’ added percolation on “Uncertainty” and the exotic “La Bruja”. More effective sliding than by Ricky Henderson.
