Dominik Schurmann Ensemble: The Seagull’s Serenade

Bassist and composer Dominik Schurmann put together a small big band with Marc Ullrich/tp-fh, Claudio Bergmin/tp, Daniel Blanc/as-fl, Domenic Landolf/ts-ss-fl, Patrick Joray/ts-fl, Lukas Briggen/tb, Kira Linn/bs, George Riccibs-bcl-cl, Tilman Gunther/p and Janis Jaunalksnis/dr. Except for a single trio tune, a gentle and reflective piano trio take of the title tune, the focus is on rich harmonies cast in various molds. For example, there’s’ a funky 70s soul fest on “Afternoon Song” featuring Bergmain and Joray in dancing moods, while cool West Coast bop on “The End Of A Bug Affair” has Schurmann’s nimble bass a rich foundation for Blanc’s alto sax. A suave Brazilian “Coffee Catt” has muted horns framing George Ricci’s clarinet” and a Tin Pan Alley’d “Moons Ago” features Song Yi Jeon’s Broadway-styled voice. The horns get elegiac for a flowing full band version of “The Seagull’s Serenade” complete with Jeon’s rich voice, while the team goes from impressionistic to upbeat grooves on “ Bird Stories”. Multi-colored music.
