BLUES FOR TODAY… Mick Kolassa: Wooden Music, Tom Heyman: 24th Street Blues

Todays take on American roots…

Plaing guitar, percussion, kazoo and singing like a carney, Mick Kolass gives avuncular styled blues with core team of Jeff Jensen/g-slg, Carl Casperson/b, Tom Lonardo/dr, Rick Seteff/p-acc and a surfeit of guests. Eric Hughes wails on the harmonica on the shuffling “Educated by the B lues” and st rolls out on “Baby Took a Limo to Memphis”. Steff’s accordion brings a Cajun feel to “Memphis Wood” and”One  Hit Wonder”, with Kolassa a hoot on the classic lines of “G as Station Sushi”, sounding like a back porch minstrel.

Tom Heyman sings while playing either slide, acoustic or baritone guitrs as he mixes and matches with Rusty Miller/p-b-dr, Scott Hirsch/perc., Mike Slo-Mo Brenner/stg, Mike Coykendall/dr and Greg Loiacono/voc. A lot of songs have a Byrds-like feel as on “Searching For The Holy Ghost” and upbeat “Barbara Jean” while a Dylanesque mood is heard on folkish tunes such as ‘Desperate” and “Sonny Jim”. Heyman can spin a yarn, and does well on the pretty “That Tender Touch” and “Hidden History”. Grab a chair and listen in.
