Wayne Alpern: Rezurrektion

Melding genres and styles, Wayne Alpern takes compositions ranging from Ellington to Mozart and lets the string quartet of Chern Hwe Fung/vi, Gregor Huebner/vi, Ron Lawrence/va and Jeremy Harmon/cel create a rich mosaic of sounds and ideas. You’ll be familiar with many of the Mozart pieces such as  “Ein Kleie Nachtmusick”, but Alpern adds dashes of modernity, with things like riffs from Roy Orbison’s “Oh, Pretty  Woman” to keep you on your toes. The team swings through the popular “ C Major Sonata”, with prancing of bows and pizzicato’s coming in and off stage like an Agatha Christie mystery. There’s a gorgeously rich and bluesy read of Ellington’s “Black Beauty” and the strings charm the socks off of “Porgy and Bess”, with hints and nuances of pop hits that make you wonder “what was that song?”. Quality quartet.
