The Black Gold Orchestra: Genesis

Producer and drummer Larry Wilson teams with musical director Melvin Jones for a big band album that feels like an opus with a story. The 20 member orchestra starts things off with Mike Walton’s bold tenor on “Gyau” for a meditative rubato with pianist Kenny Banks before things get bold and beautiful during “On The Move” and the charging “Firm Roots”. Erik Miller’s organ grooves under Jamel Mitchell’s sax on “The Creation” and Frank Houston is dreamy on “Intoxicating  Beauty”. Soft brass surrounds Mike Burton’s alto sax for the soulful “Protoype” and Melvin Jones’ horn glides on the fluffy “Release”. The band bops a big beat on “Merging Lanes” and the team heads off to the local disco for a wacky wacka wooka on “Nutville Remix”. Charts for the heart.
