Subtitled “Recorded Before The Birth Of Yes” and “Rare Recordings From the Early Years 1963-1970, this two dis set has recordings of the various members of Yes before they became, well, YES!
There is almost nothing that gives hints of “Roundabout”, etc, if that’s what you’re looking for. The first disc has drummer white with his band Hahppy Magazine, with lots of English pop rock and harmonies on “Marlene” and “Leah” while “Brazil” sounds like a lounge band. Steve Howe taps into his inner Chuck Berry withn with Syndicats on “Maybelline” while also in a pop mood on “Why Must They Criticize”. Tony Kay gets dark with Winston’s Fumbs on “Real Crazy Apartment” and Jon Anderson’s voice hasn’t changed yet to falsetto on “ You Came Along” and “Sonata of Love”. Historical intrigue.
