Earthy soul sounds akin to STAX records is delivered by vocalist Johnny Rawls, backed by a Memphis BBQ tam of Dan Ferguson/key, Richy Puga/dr, Johnny McGhee/g, Bob Trenchard/b, Jon Olaazabal/perc a handful of backing singers and a horn section of Andy Roman/ts, Nick Flood/sax, Mike Middleton/tp and Frank Otero/tb. Rawls gets funky with Roman’s tenor on pieces like “Walking Heart Attack”, with some gritty blues smoking up the juke joint for “Heal Me” and “Trying To Live My Life Without You”. Rawls preaches it on “Lies” and gives a 50s feel on “Hungry Heart”, but most of the time the music is a time warp to the early days of 60s soul, and there isn’t anything wrong with that.
