Denny Zeitlin: Crazy Rhythm-Exploring George Gershwin

Bill Evans-inspired pianist Denny Zeitlin goes solo on this rich and melodic album of interpretations of George Gershwin material. Zeitlin is a master of the rabbit trail, and he does some glorious ones, with his left hand wandering on a thin pat of “S’Wonderful” and strolling around during “I Was Doing All Right”. There’s a dark elegance to “By Strauss” and some old time vintage stride during “The Man I Love” that mix colors like a Dutch painter. Some soft reflections waft on “I’ve Got A Crush On You” before the fingers get hectic on a peppy “Fascinating Rhythm”.

Everything by Zeitlin is worthwhile, and this latest release has him in his best milieu, alone together with his piano. Another warm colored tile to add to his rich mosaic of a catalogue.
