Alex Cole/fl-sax and Carl Michel/g form a chamber jazz team with James Sutter/b, Carolyn Trowbridge/vib, Elaine Barber/harp and Bob Hoffner/pstg on this sublime album of originals and covers. The teams sustains a gentle tension on a pastoral read of John Coltrane’s “After The Rain” with the strings are soft and delicate on Paul Motian’s “ Garden of Eden”. Vibes are sensuous for “Magled Tango” and dainty on the driving “Locust Grove” with soft chimes during “Wait/Not Wait”. Cole’s flute is fluffy on the cirrus “Rolling…” and Michel’s guitar is sublime for “Bagatelle II”. Lots to like here on this understated gem.
