Jon Menges: Spirit of 3, Spirit of 4

Playing trumpet and flugelhorn, Jon Menges creates an album dividing up the time between a  trio with Pete McCann/g and Evan Gregor/b and a quarter of Joe Fitzgerald/b, Robert Weiss/dr and Nathan Childers/ts-ss. Of the former, Menges is reminiscent of Kenny Dorham, both when muted on the easy swinging “Stairs” and the open horned “”Tree of Hope” with some clever guitar work on “Angelynne”. The quartet has the leader in a cool bop mode muted on “Focus” while the open horn gets some muscle support from Weiss on “Coqui” and the somber “Heartbreak”>The melding of trumpet and tenor sax is reminiscent of vintage West Coast Cool”, especially on “The Spirit Within”. A warm breeze
