Jeff Coffin: Look For Water

Leader Jeff Coffin plays tenor and soprano sax, leading a team with Tony Dagradi/ts, James Singleton/b and Johnny Vidacovich/dr through a collection of originals. Except for the “Toy Piano” tinkling at the beginning of the album, the sounds are a mix of swing and post bop work, with the melding of soprano and tenor saxes a delicious mix on the bouncy “ Green Light For Bill Drewes” and the two tenors getting volcanic on “Half A Baton”. Coffin’s tenor goes mano a mano on the arm wrestling match with Vidacovich on “Look For Water” while the latter gives a snappy intro to the free tumble of “Milford”. Helen Gillet brings in her cello for a languid “Luminosity”, and the band is dreamy on “Sweet Magnolias”. A romp through the reeds.
