ELLA’S LONG SHADOW…Mira Choquette: In Reel Time, Tatina Eva-Marie & Jeremy Corren: Two at the Most

The bright, clear and dna-embedded swing of Ella Fitzgerald has been passed on to the latest generation of female vocalists, albeit in various formats. The world is a better place because of it…

Tatiana Eva-Marie teams up with pianist Jeremy Corren for a collection of duets that is reminiscent of Ella Fitzgerald’s classic duos with Ellis Larkins. She has a nice mix of intimacy and jive on pieces like “The End Of A Love Affair” and like her, excels in introductions as on “Penthouse Serenade”. The two are sing-songy for “I Got IT Bad and That Ain’t Good” and slowly draw out “Fly Me To The Moon”. Mark Buchan brings his tenor’d voice in for a couple of  pieces, with a rich take of “They’ll Never Believe Me”. Personal conversations.

Mira Choquette has the relentless sunny cheer of Ella Fitzgerald in her tone on this bouncy album with Ewen Farncombe/p, Josh Goldman/b and  Morgan Childs/dr. The team has a gas on the double timed “Just One Of Those Things” with  a rich tension between the band’s propulsion and Choquette’s exquisite holding back. Childs leads the rumble through the fun calypso of “Jump In The Line” and his brushes sashay around Choquette’s bluesy “No Moon At All”. Farncombe strides a cozy intro for Choquette on the co-written “Love Crime” and gives a nice bop to “The Old Country”. The sound is  tad distant in feel for the recording, but it gives the session a “live” feel. Let’s see her in LA!
