Rich toned guitarist David Blake mixes originals with jazz covers on this personal and subdued teaming with drummer Ari Hoenig and bassist Drew Gress. He gives a soft swing to the thick “Cedar Realm” with a rich intro to the mellow groove of his “Little Quarry” and a calm lead in for Hoenig’s brushes on Charles Mingus’ “Duke Ellington’s Sound of Love”. Hoenig is snappy on the kinetic “Raincheck” with Gress opening up into the clever musings of “Night Dreamer”. The tensile and consistently understated solos and musings is reminiscent of Julian Lage, showing a trend of today’s guitarists favoring flavor over heat.
