Bassist Vicente Archer forms a trio with all stars Gerald Clayton/p and Bill Stewart/dr for a mix of originals and covers, with the focus on subtle interplay. The leader shows his lyricism on a reich solo of ‘Lighthouse” and does some clever duet work with Stewart on a couple reads of “It Takes Two To Know One”. He takes the lead on Metheny’s somber Message ToA Fried” , and creates a soft p ulse for Clayton on “Mirai”. The trio at times sounds like Blue Note era Herbie Hancock, as on the stately “Drop of Dusk” and nifty “13/14”. Cerebral swing.
