Bassist Matt Ulery creates a pastoral album of 6 tunes in Gil Evans fashion on this recent release. With a rhythm secio of Jon Deitemyer/dr and Paul Bedal/p, he brings in woodwinds of Dustin Laurenzi/ts, Zachary Good/cl, Andrew Nogal/ob, Ben Roidl-Ward/bsn and Constance Volk/fl to blend with the brass of James Davis/tp, Chris Shuttleworth/tb and Matthew Oliphant/frh for some elegiac harmonies as on the gentle “The Prairie Is A Rolling oCean” and the floating “Bridges”. Ulery drives the band a bit on the waltzing “Left Window” while Shuttleworth and Bedal are softly solemn during “The Brink of What”. There’s a cheerful samba on “Under a Dusken Crown” with Laurenzi creating cirrus clouds on”Another Book or Ornaments”. Pastel sounds.
