There are singers, and those that use music to tell stories. Gruff toned David Deacon fits into the latter, growling out lyrics like vintage Tom Wits on material ranging from a dark boogie chillun’d “No Never Mind” to some tender folk tales like the acoustic “Poetry”. He gets funky around the bass line of the chunky “ Waving Free” and veers around the slide guitar of the earthy “Hard Time”. He has the delivery of a carney on the dark blue “Rising U Again” and “Jane” and yet can be sensitive on the ballad “Arc of Life”. Raconteur deliveries.
