Vintage sounding hard bop is delivered by leader and pianist Kevin O’Connell and his bold team of Adam Brenner/as-ts, Paul Gill/b and Mark Taylor/dr through a mix of standards and originals. O’Connell sounds like he’s imbibed from the waters of Horace Silver, with a firm grip with Brenner’s alto on “Newest Blues” and “A Thought”. He gets slinky with Gill on “Plays Culebrita” and strides wide for “Blue Seven”, giving a clever intro to “For Heaven’s Sake”. Brenner’s tenor is palpable on the bold “Boo De Dah” and rides the wave on “One For George”. A blue plate of blue note inspirations.
