Composer and saxist Felipe Salles conducts a large ensemble with some all star guest soloists on this album of originals. The mix of five woodwinds, five trumpets, four trombones and five members of a rhythm section create sounds ranging from a sleek Gil Evansy “Storytelling” for tenor saxist Melissa Aldana to an Afro Cuban “World Citizen” that has Yosvany Terry’s alto riding the crest. The brass is bold on the elegiac “Wanderlust” that surrounds Nadje Noordhuis’ flugelhorn, while Paquito D’Rivera’s warm and woody clarinet glides through the easy swing of “Re-Invention”. Most fragrant is the sublime guitar of Chico Pinheiro serenading in the plaza for “The Promise of Happiness”, with the percussion in a rumbling mood for the fluid title tune with Magos Herrera singing in wondrous fashion. Cerebral celebrations.
