Pianist/leader Bill O’Connell mixes his two loves of bop and Latin on this album recorded at Gosman’s Dock, Montauk NY. The core of O’Connell with beefy toned Craig Handy/ts, Santi Debriano/b and swinging Billy Hart/dr are nimble and peppy, with Handy soaring through “Sparks” while Hart delivers a Latin feel to a thrilling read of Bobby Timmons’ gospel drenched “Moanin’”. Debriano brings in a modal feel for the leader to stretch out with on “Ripty Boom” and the team goes into overdrive on “One Finger Snap”. Trumpeter Randy Brecker jumps up on stage to bop on the finale, “Tip Toes’ and adds to the extremely clever and Latin-tinged take of “Do Nothing Till You Hear From Me”. Salsa and swing arm in arm.
