I keep trying to figure out the allure of the Jazz Is Dead series, as the albums all seem to be variations of the same theme. Here, Nigerian drummer Tony Allen teams with producer Adrian Younge get together for what seams to be thick chords and bass lines around the same AfroFunk beat, as on “Ebun”, “Steady Trembel” and the slowed down “No Beginning”. There’s a dash of Herbie Hancock’s Headhunters on “Makoko” and Loren Oden brings his voice into “Oladipo”, but basically, it sounds like music for a skating rink.
