West African trumpeter Peer Somuah brings a fragrant mix of jazz and equatorial soul on this release with Jesse Sohilderink/ts, Anton de Bruin/key, Marijn van de Ven/b, Jane Meljer/dr, Denny Rombout/perc, Thomas Nil Lantey/perc and various guest vocalists.
Somuah’s tone and drive at times is reminiscent of Freddie Hubbard, burning up everything around him on the rapid “Mission On Earth” and bopping on “A Thought Of You”. He also shows a lovely tone with string on “Moonlight” along with vocalist “Letanya Alberto” while he digs in with van de Ven on the hip “Green Path”. Some rich West African guitar licks liven up “Odo” as well as on The Sky” with folk voices by Stevo Atambire, and there’s nice tropical sweat with poet Lisett Ma Neza on “The Universe”. If this guy comes to the US, I’m in line to see him.
