Jared Sims Helbender-The Resistance

So you want to be a rock and roll star?

Jazz alto saxist Jared Sims puts together a band akin Miles Davis’ On The Corner, bringing rock and funk rhythms that mix the head banging of Led Zeppelin with the harmonics of jazz. The team of Andrew Stern/g, James Rohr/keys, Marc Friedman/b and Randy Wooten/dr must have listened to a lot of Black Sabbath and 70s rockers in preparation for this one. The result is some acidic alto sax work by the leader on the fuzzy guitar’d “Ensuing Plight”, some Foghat head banging along with Rohr on “Infintite Colosus”, with lots a of wacka wooka guitar wrestling with the leader on the acidic “Ground Control”. Dark chords get murky on “Orbital” and Friedman lays down a funky line for the pounding “Earth”. Jazz masters of reality? Don’t get so paranoid!
