Wayne Escoffery: Like Minds

Best known for his work with The MIngus Big Band and Tom Harrell’s Quintet, saxist Wayne Escoffery blends both worlds, and then some, on this swinging album with a core team of David Kikoski/pkey, Mark Whitfield/dr, Ugonna Okegwo/b and guests Gregory Porter/voc, Mike Moreno/g and Tom Harrell/tp himself sitting in.
Escoffery’s tenor sax gets funky with Harrell and keyboardist Kikoski on a reworking of the Mingus classic “Nostalgia In Times Square”. Porter joins and agonizes with the two with a raspy  voice on a blue and agonizing “My Truth” while Harrell steps out for an assured Porter on “Rivers Of Babylon”. Escoffery’s tenor is muscular on the upbeat post bopper Like Minds” and “Shuffle”, while glistening. with Moreno on a fragrant take of “Idle Moments”, On soprano, the leader gives  simmering “Sonjg of Serenity”, as well, with Kikoski supplying a rich texture. Lots of varied colors, all with a mind of strength in numbers.
