Violinist Sara Caswell brings her team of Jesse Lewis/g, Ike Sturm/b, Jared Schonig/dr and guest Chris Dingman/vib for a rich and exciting mix of styles and ideas. Her tone is sweeping and dramatic, lovely and upbeat on pieces like “South Shore” where she veers around Dingman’s vibes, while she gets folksy with Lewis on a thoughtful “Stillness”. Sturm leads the way through a post bopping groove on “Voyage” and there are some clever guitar effects on the d reamy “On My Way To You” , with Caswell swinging as hard as anything Stephane Grappelli could ever come up with on “7 Anes”. She even throws in a Bach-ish inro to the aria of “Warren’s Way”, and gets down and funky with Schonig on the funky “Last Call”. This is someone worth tracking down. When’s LA on her itinerary?
