LADY BIRDS…Ranglais: Pairings, Jane Irving: Don’t Quit Now

Yes, there are male and female vocalists. Here are samples of one of the binary voices.

Vocalist Eve Seltzer teams with guitarist Ben Wood for a cozy and upbeat collection of duets. She’s got a husky voice and she uses it in settings ranging from an almost klezmer swing in “Joseph Joseph” to to an easygoing “This Time The Dreams On Me”. The two put together a cozy “I’m Old Fashioned” and folksy “Lune de Miel” with Wood switching guitars around from an acoustic strummer on “Too Close For Comfort” to a plugged in laconic “I Don’t Wanna Sing”. Friendly persuasions.

Jane Irving mixes stylish bebop with rich stories as she sings and plays piano along with Josh Richman/p-arr, Kevin Hailey/b and Kayvon Gordon/dr. She works her way well around Halley’s bass on a hip read of Dave Frishberg’s “Snowbound” and attractively conversant on his “The Underdog” and also the cozy “Baby Don’t You Quit Now”. She scats and coos on the Latin “Spring Song” and is nimble on “A Night In Tunisia”. A gentle on the mind “Let The Flower Grows” and intimate “Love Dance” shows rich vocal dexterity. A fun one!
