Vocalist and poet Pierre L. Chambers sounds like a mix between Oscar Brown and Dwight Tribble on this earthy release of richly arranged tunes with Karen Hammack/p, Henry Franklin/b, Clayton Cameron/dr, Dori Amarillo/g, Jeff Kaye/fh and Cathy Segal-Garcia/voc. He shows he knows how to tell a story, as with Franklin and Hammack gives an avuncular tale on “This Mother” and a followup on ‘My Father”. He’s lithe and modal around Cameron’s cymbals on ”My Favorite T hings” hand brings a nice lilt to “The Way You Look Tonight”. He sounds born to sing “Afro Blue” and sh ows his tender side on “The Nearness of You”. A heart of flesh.
