Guitarist Julian Lage continues his course of creating albums high on concise lyricism with a six song release with his regular trio of Jorge Roeder and drummer Dave King, with guest and kindred spirit Bill Frisell sitting in for extra atmosphere.
The album is divided into acoustic and electric formats, with Lage creating intimate duos with both Frisell and Roeder. Plugged in, guitar and drums are loose and gentle on “Mantra”, fragrant with brushes on the dreamy “Missing Voice” and patiently spacious for tha back porch strums of “Everything Helps”. On steel strings, there’s a cozy swing to the rural “The Layers” and rich interplay between guitar and bas on the folksy “Double Southpaw”. Completely unassuming and informal, drawing you in with understatement.
