Percussionist Chembo Corniel brings together a mix of music and messages on this album with a rotating team of musicians and vocalists. The cut and paste team includes Hery Paz/ts-fl, Carlos Cuervas/key-p, Ian Stewart/b, Joel E. Mateo/dr and a busload of guests. Poets Ismael East Carlo and Felipe Luciano give speeches on the thick testimonies of “P.R.I.D.E.” and reed heavy “Red Hook Rumba” respectfully, with the words sometimes in the way of the sounds. Likewise, the tribal “Volando Con Don Pancho Terry” has the namesake preaching through an avalanche of Afro Cuban beats. Other than that, Paz simmers on a clever read of Thelonious Monk’s “Evidence” his flute flies on “Lagrima De Monte” he teams with Cuevas’ keyboards on a fervent “Dalia”. Not sure which comes first, the sounds or the story.
