Tenor saxist Alex Weiss forms a two read team with Dan Blake/ss along with Yana Davydova/eg, Dmitry Ishenko/b, Ches Smit/dr and guest Marta Sanchez/p for a collection of mostly originals. With Ssancez sitting in for a couple pieces, the team digs in for an intense “Thread Your Grandmother’s Needles” driven by Ishenko, and the team gets darkly propelled by Smith on “Akira : Sun and Moon”. Ornette Coleman’s “Humpty Dumpty” has some fragrant bop lines tied together while the two float on “Your Dark Shadow Arrives at the Door”. Weiss is bright and bold over the clippety clop of “Really OK” and bluesy for the waltzing “Thumbelina” with the team funky and frisky for “Organized Religion”. Rich reeds.
