Chris Madsen: The Trio Book

Tenor saxist Chris Madsen lets his tone do the talking on this subdued and dreamy solo outing with bassist Clark Sommers and drummer Dana Hall. HIs tone is palpably delicate with Sommers’ bas on a misty “NRW” and going for subtones around the brushes on “Mirror”. Madsen goes bel canto on his aria of “ Granada” and swoops into musical magma for “Elderdown” and gently sways to “Amethyst Secrets” There’s a bit of backbeat to the bright “West Coast Blues” but this is just a primary color in the pastel of a release. In a mellow tone.
