Billy Childs: The Winds of Change

he catalogue of Billy Childs has as many colors as a painter’s palate. I’ve seen him in chamber orchestras, supporting vocalists, hard bopping and even  plugging in, all like each style is his comfort food.
This time around, he’s in a sublime post bopping quartet setting with Ambrose Akinmusire/tp, Scott Colley/b and Brian Blade/dr for classy modern sounds. The Freddie Hubbard alumnus Childs shows that he knows how to dig in, and he does with Blade on the crisp “The Black Angel” while the two direct the groove like traffic cops for the warm toned Akinmusire on “The Great Western Loop”. The trumpeter puffs softly on the graceful title tune, floats on the rippling “Crystal Silence” and squeezes out sighs on the reflective “Master of the Game”. Colley gets somber on the  probing “The End Of Innocence”, while in trio format, Childs is reflective and gentle on the graceful “I Thought I Knew”. I’ll stand in line to catch this band when they hit town!
