Guitarist Tomer Cohen has a tone and deliver hinting at the thick sounds of Bill Frisell and Adam Rogers. He uses his six strings in a trio format with bassist Matt Penman and drummer Obed Calvaire to create a mix of soft reflections and intricate interplay on this album of eight originals. There is a strong plaintive impressionism throughout the release, as on the melodic title piece and the thoughtful mix of guitar and brushes on “Hathadshut (Regeneration)”. The team gets most assertive with Calvaire’s rumbling intro to the rockish “Connecting The Dots” but the intensity is more on the lower butanes, with the three digging deep on the mid tempo jam of “Probably More Than Two” with some busy stick work, or the change of dynamics of “Sunrise”. Penman gets a spotlight on the pastel’d “First Laps” and conversational “Pstures” with Cohen and Calvaire foraging through “Empty?”. Folkish fire.
