Lakecia Benjamin: Phoenix

It seems that every now and then, there becomes a new “up and coming star” and alto saxist Lakecia Benjamin seems to be groomed for that role. This album has her in heavy company, with guest appearances by no les than Wayne Shorter, Patrice Rushen, Dianne Reeves, and even Communist Angela Davis, for a bit of political activism.

She’s with a core team of Victor Gould/key, EJ Strickland/dr, Ivan Taylor/b and Josh Evans/tp along with a slew of guests on strings, keys, horn, vocal and percussion. Apart from Davis’ socialist distractions, Shorter speaks up on a graceful “Supernova”, Reeves is rich on a pulsating “Mercy”, George Anne Muldo is harrowing for the title track and Sonia Sanchez takes part in a p hone call on “Peace Is A Haiku Song”. Musically, Benjamin is spot on for the post bopping “New Mornings” and delivers a passionate rubato on “Trane”, bouncing with joy on the bopping “Moods”. She’s touring with the Monterrey Jazz Festival All Stars-which part will she play in that performance?
