Clean and vintage toned trumpet playing is delivered by John Bailey, swinging with a team of classic vets like George Cables/p, Scott Colley/b and Victor Lewis/dr on this mix of originals and covers. Bailey is warm and muscular on modal pieces like the title track and the simmering “Groove Samba” while glistening with Colley on “Rose”. Cables is in melodic form on “Ode To Thaddeus” and works a good frame for Bailey on “How Do You Know”. Lewis does some creative work on a read of The Beatles’ “She’s Leaving Home” and lays down a nice feel for ”Various Nefarious”. Unpretentiously flowing ideas.
