Best known for his work with Dizzy Gillespie, guitarist Ed Cherry teams up for a nifty Hammond B3 groove fest with organ-meister Kyle Koehler, drummer Byron Landham and Monte Croft on the vibes. Cherry creates a wide swath of colors with his strings, bringing in Asian harmonies on the exotic “Japanese Folk Song” while giving a rich supply of harmonics akin to Wes Montgomery on the legend’s own “Mr. Walker”. Cherry creates cool hues on Grant Green’s “Green Jeans” and boogaloos with Koehler on “Ding Dong” Lanham leads the swing on the sleek “Lawns” and Koehler h ums through “Spring Is Here” and the shuffling “Holy Land”. Vintage picking done right.
