Brad Mehldau: Plays the Beatles-Your Mother Should Know

Pianist Brad Mehldau was one of the first jazz  pianists to explore the Beatles songbook back in the earliest days of his career with his Art of the Trio series that got everyone’s attention. Here, in a cozy and personal sounding studio, he goes it alone giving us reads of pieces such as a blue and Chopinesque “I Am The Walrus”, a simmering and stark “ Baby ‘s In Black” an elliptical “She Said She Said” and a Monkishly slow “Maxell’s Silver Hammer.” He does a nice eight to the bar boogie with “I Saw Her Standing There” and is stately with a strong left hand on the title tune, as well as on the laconic “Golden Slumbers”. He throws in a one-off of early David Bowie, just to keep you on your toes, with a pensive “Life On Mars”. A trip into Mehldau’s musical Man Cave.
